Weil Featured as 2023 Law360 Trials Practice Group of the Year

Law360 has honored Weil’s Litigation team among its 2023 “Trials Practice Groups of the Year” for notching several high-profile wins for major clients over the previous year.

The publication highlighted the Firm’s successful defense of Meta Platforms Inc. against a Federal Trade Commission challenge to its purchase of Within Unlimited and its representation of Comcast Cable Communications LLC in a multimillion-dollar patent case among the team’s major victories in 2023.

Noting that the team is “a major part of Weil's U.S. and international success” with more than 300 attorneys globally, Law360 noted the “steady coordination and communication among” the Department’s three Co-Chairs, David J. Lender, Jonathan D. Polkes and Elizabeth S. Weiswasser.

Elizabeth emphasized the teamwork within the Department and across the other practices at the Firm as well as a culture that focuses on mentorship and collaboration.

"We've always focused on organic growth and promoting our homegrown talent," she said. "Earlier this year, in January, we promoted five litigation associates and counsel to partner."

David described how leadership pairs senior attorneys with new associates to teach the young lawyers important courtroom skills from the moment they join the Firm.

"We all work seamlessly together because we are focused on the same goal, to present the best litigation that can serve the clients," he said.

“The multigenerational approach to building litigation teams gave up-and-coming associates exposure to high-profile cases last year, including the FTC's antitrust challenge to Meta's acquisition of virtual reality company Within Unlimited,” Law360 noted.

Weil’s team defeated the FTC’s request to enjoin the acquisition of Within Unlimited. The government subsequently dropped the challenge and the transaction closed successfully.

"The Meta case was such a novel argument," David told Law360. "The government took a unique approach to challenge the merger. We had an incredible litigation team paired up with expertise from our antitrust team to present a united front."
