Weil Secures Dismissal of Double Murder Charges for Client James Genrich

On April 13, 2026, Weil, alongside partner organizations, secured the dismissal of decades-old, double-murder charges against client James “Jimmy” Genrich related to a series of pipe bombings in Grand Junction, Colorado. This dismissal is one byproduct of Weil’s fifth appellate victory on behalf of Mr. Genrich during the course of a nearly decade-long representation.

The dismissal follows a court decision granting Mr. Genrich a new trial after a determination that the State’s only direct evidence relied on toolmark “matching – a forensic method now widely regarded as scientifically unreliable.

Both the Mesa County Colorado District Attorney’s Office and the Grand Junction Police Department ultimately concluded that securing a conviction on re-trial was “no longer legally or practically viable,” particularly in light of potentially exculpatory, new evidence, and sought dismissal.

Mr. Genrich continues to serve a 72-year sentence on related, lesser charges, despite the dismissal of the underlying murder charges. Those remaining convictions rest on the same discredited evidence. Earlier this year, a Colorado court ruled that Mr. Genrich is procedurally barred from contesting those lesser charges due to a filing technicality, a ruling that Weil and its partners are now challenging on appeal.

After maintaining his innocence for more than 30 years, Mr. Genrich is very pleased with this outcome, and the team looks forward to continuing to advocate for his exoneration. The Weil team includes Brian Liegel, Greg Silbert, Marina Masterson, Anastasia Zaluckyj (Not Yet Admitted in New York), Jill Jacobson (Not Yet Admitted in Florida), and Retired Partner Irwin Warren. The Innocence Project counsel includes Chris Fabricant. Colorado counsel includes Kathleen Lord, of the Korey Wise Innocence Project and Colorado attorneys Scott Troxell and Rebekka Higgs.
