Jeff Homrig
Jeff Homrig is Co-Head of Weil’s IP, Technology & Science Litigation practice and a nationally acclaimed IP and commercial trial lawyer. For 25 years, he has led and tried high-stakes intellectual property and commercial cases around the country for some of the world’s most innovative and leading technology and life sciences companies.

An “exceptional lawyer” who “finds the best solutions to suit your company and understands your difficulties,” Jeff serves as both first-chair trial lawyer and strategic counselor for his clients. His success in and out of the courtroom has been recognized by Chambers USA (Band 1 nationwide for trade secrets litigation) and Legal 500 (Leading Partner nationwide for trade secrets litigation), among others. 

A versatile lawyer, Jeff is equally accomplished representing plaintiffs and defendants across a wide range of issues and disputes, including patent, trade secret, oil & gas, financial, and other commercial matters. Jeff provides clients with pragmatic and practical advice to help defuse conflicts before they arise, when possible, and to navigate them safely when conflict is unavoidable.

As a trial lawyer, Jeff is adept at translating complex technological issues into core themes that persuade juries. As a result, his clients regularly call on him to lead trials and cases across the country, including in state and federal courts in California, Texas, Delaware, and before the International Trade Commission (ITC). Resident in Weil’s Texas offices, Jeff retains deep ties to the Bay Area and maintains an office there.

Academic and Public Service

Jeff serves as an adjunct lecturer at Berkeley Law, teaching the Patent Litigation II course. Jeff also co-authors the Federal Judicial Center’s definitive how-to guide for federal judges on patent litigation, which is now in its third edition.

Jeff has also served as a deputy district attorney for Santa Clara County, trying numerous criminal cases to verdict.

  • Lead trial counsel for Vade in trade secrets action involving email security. Obtained favorable jury verdict defeating US$165 million in total damages sought and defeated permanent injunction.
  • Lead appellate counsel for Vade in plaintiff Proofpoint’s appeal of Vade’s trial verdict and post-trial wins in the above trade secrets action. Argued and won the Ninth Circuit appeal involving novel legal issues under the DTSA.
  • Lead trial counsel for major energy company in pending trade secrets action relating to renewable fuels.
  • Lead trial counsel for pallet inspection company in pending Delaware patent infringement action brought by competitor.
  • Lead trial counsel for plaintiff online commerce developer in pending Texas patent infringement action against global social media company.
  • Lead counsel for drone manufacturer in confidential trade secrets disputes with competitors.
  • Lead counsel for investment company in confidential trade secrets dispute with competitor.
  • Lead counsel for oil & gas company in confidential contractual dispute with customer.

  • Lead counsel for major social media company in patent infringement action involving predictive search. Won summary judgment of non-infringement on multiple grounds.
  • Lead trial counsel for IML in trade secret action relating to business trade secrets. Obtained preliminary and permanent injunctions and US$1 million consent judgment.
  • Lead trial counsel for Envia in a trade secrets matter involving lithium ion battery technology for electric vehicles. Settled on favorable terms.
  • Co-lead trial counsel for microcoil developer in upcoming patent infringement and trade secret trials relating to coils for treatment of aneurysms. Settled on favorable terms.
  • Senior trial counsel for Irving Consumer Products in patent infringement action involving tissue. Secured non-infringement judgment and invalidity judgment.
  • Lead counsel for leading innovator of LNP delivery vehicles for mRNA in confidential trade secrets dispute.
  • Senior trial and arbitration counsel for auto part remanufacturer in trade secret dispute involving business trade secrets. Settled on favorable terms after arbitration.
  • Senior trial counsel for Arista in an ITC patent infringement enforcement proceeding relating to switching operating systems and protocols. The enforcement hearing in April 2017 resulted in finding of non-infringement, saving the company hundreds of millions in fines and potentially billions in sales. Senior trial counsel in follow-on ITC action involving additional patents, secured non-infringement finding. Retained for both matters to replace prior counsel after adverse determinations in the underlying ITC matters.
  • Trial counsel for Symantec in a multi-patent case brought by Intellectual Ventures in Delaware. Secured non-infringement jury verdict and post-trial invalidity judgment.
  • Trial counsel for TransPerfect in a multi-patent infringement case in California related to website translation technologies. Won a complete jury verdict finding: MotionPoint’s three patents invalid and not infringed; TransPerfect’s patent valid and infringed by MotionPoint; and awarding TransPerfect more than US$1 million in damages. The Daily Journal named the case a Top Plaintiffs’ Verdict by Impact.
  • Argued, briefed, and won the appeal in a US$100 million cardiovascular stent breach-of-contract litigation on behalf of Dr. G. David Jang. Replaced original counsel following an adverse judgment in the district court.
  • Trial counsel for Google and YouTube in a Texas patent infringement action in which Eolas and the University of California claimed ownership of the “interactive web.” The jury invalidated all asserted claims after deliberating for only 2.5 hours, defeating claims for hundreds of millions in damages and injunctive relief.

Jeff is highly regarded and regularly recognized in the IP field. He is currently nationally ranked by Chambers USA in Band 1 for Intellectual Property: Trade Secrets. Clients praised Jeff in the most recent edition for being an “exceptional attorney. He represents clients on complex patent and trade secret matters, and has impressive expertise in both software and hardware cases.” Jeff was again ranked in 2025 as a nationwide “Leading Partner” by Legal 500 for Trade Secrets (Litigation and Non-Contentious Matters), as well as recommended for Patents: Litigation (International Trade Commission), Patents: Litigation (Full Coverage) and Trademarks: Litigation. He has been named to Lawdragon 500’s “Leading Litigators in America” (2023-2025) and “Leading Global IP Lawyers” lists (2025). Jeff is also recommended by IAM Patent 1000, which where he applauded for having “a knack for distilling down complex cases,” and quickly identifying “the crux of the matter at hand to develop winning litigation strategies.” He was previously recognized by Law360 as a leading IP attorney under the age of 40.

Jeff spent the first ten years of his career at Weil. Prior to re-joining Weil, he was a partner at another leading global law firm, where he served as Global Vice Chair of its Intellectual Property Litigation practice and the leader of its IP practice in Texas.
