Private Equity partner Timothy Burns has been named one of Law360’s 2025 “Rising Stars” in the Private Equity category, honoring his success guiding financial sponsors and institutional investors on their most important deals.
Law360 noted Tim’s work advising the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), Glencore PLC and British Columbia Investment Management Corp. (BCI), as shareholders, in Viterra Ltd.’s approximately $18 billion business combination with Bunge Ltd.; BCI in its $3.1 billion acquisition, with Searchlight Capital Partners, of Consolidated Communications; and CPP Investment’s approximately $1 billion investment in support of the merger between Novolex and Pactiv Evergreen.
The Viterra/Bunge merger was the biggest deal of his career so far, Tim told the publication, and BCI’s acquisition of Consolidation Communications with Searchlight Capital was the most interesting case he has recently worked on.
“It was a very fulfilling experience,” he said, referring to the BCI deal. “Helping an institutional investor navigate a U.S. public M&A transaction – that’s the kind of work that sticks with you.”
Helping other people succeed, whether it’s colleagues or clients, motivates him, Tim said. As a Canadian, helping clients from his home country is particularly meaningful.
“There’s definitely some personal pride for me in seeing these Canadian investors do well, and having the opportunity to play a role in it is pretty fantastic,” Tim said.
