Law360 has named Weil among its 2024 “Technology Groups of the Year” for guiding some of the most significant matters in the sector over the past year. The Firm is one of just five firms recognized nationwide.
Weil’s work as global antitrust counsel to Microsoft in its now-completed $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Inc. as well as the Firm’s antitrust representation of the tech giant in its $10 billion investment in OpenAI were highlighted. Law360 also noted Weil’s work advising Core Scientific in its chapter 11 restructuring, which cut the company’s debt by $400 million.
Referring to the Microsoft/Activision deal, U.S. Antitrust Co-Head Michael Moiseyev told the publication that Weil was “the global quarterback on that deal,” steering it through multiple jurisdictions, working with local counsel in some countries and handling the matter across the E.U., U.K. and U.S.
"Microsoft was able to close that transaction last year and avoid a massive [$3 billion] termination fee as well as moving forward with their strategic vision in gaming," Michael said.
Global Litigation Department Co-Head David Lender noted how the Firm’s representation of Core Scientific in its chapter 11 proceedings reflects Weil’s unique ability to master the complex and evolving technology at the heart of any client’s business.
"The inputs, the variables, the high energy costs. Even understanding how people go about mining these algorithms, these computers that are running 24/7 in these places in the middle of Texas," he said. "It was a great case to work on."
