Appeals and Strategic Counseling Co-Head Robert Niles-Weed has been named one of Law360’s Appellate “Rising Stars” for his success guiding significant matters and being named a practice leader early in his career.

Law360 highlighted his work securing a 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bartenwerfer v. Buckley, a case involving the Bankruptcy Code’s fraud exception to discharge; helping Regeneron win a $406.8 million verdict against competitor Amgen; and his appointment to Co-Head of Weil’s Appeals and Strategic Counseling practice.

Asked how he expects the industry to change in the future, Robert told the publication that he expects it will be more common to integrate appellate teams into trial teams – a strategy that Weil regularly employs and which was utilized in the Regeneron trial.

“Historically, an appellate lawyer wouldn’t come on until after there had been an outcome in the trial court,” he said. “And now, I think we’re able to add a ton of value by being at trial, drafting key motions in the district court or bankruptcy court, and so deepening our involvement to help strengthen the case from the jump.”
