Weil Gains Global Elite Ranking in the GCR 100 2024

Weil continues to strengthen its rankings in Global Competition Review’s “GCR 100 2024,” this year placing on the Global Elite list, which features the top 25 law firms for antitrust and competition worldwide. The Firm is ranked in both the overall “Global Elite” and “Global Elite: Mergers” categories, recognizing Weil’s excellent international capabilities. The Firm’s Washington, D.C. practice continues to be ranked as “Outstanding.” The New York practice was again ranked as “Highly Recommended,” as was the U.K. practice, an increase from last year’s listing. The France practice is recognized as “Recommended.”

The publication highlights that Weil “boasts an impressive list of Big Tech clients,” exemplified by high-profile litigation on behalf of Meta Platforms in its acquisition of Within Unlimited and Microsoft in its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. GCR also points out that Weil “has an active private litigation practice,” noting the Firm’s representation of Simon & Schuster and subsequent dismissal of proposed class action litigation that alleged the company colluded to fix prices of physical books and e-books.

In Washington, D.C., GCR recognized the Firm for having a “strong merger control practice,” and highlighted the group’s recent work advising Walgreens Boots Alliance in its $8.9 billion acquisition of Summit Health-CityMD and Sanofi in its $3.2 billion acquisition of Prevention Bio.

In New York, the publication says Weil’s team “includes well-regarded litigators.” GCR noted the Firm’s success representing Saks Fifth Avenue in an alleged “no poach” antitrust class action and BASF Corporation in a multidistrict litigation accusing pesticide manufacturers of violating federal antitrust laws.

In Europe, the U.K. antitrust team was recognized for acting on Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, securing conditional approval for the deal from the Competition and Markets Authority, and MBCC Group on its €5.2 billion sale to construction chemicals competitor Sika, following a novel “fast-track” Phase II review by the CMA. The Paris team was highlighted for securing approval in Brussels for Sienna Investment Managers in its acquisition of a majority stake in ECT Group. GCR also highlighted that Weil has strengthened its Brussels practice in recent years.

The Global Elite is a competitive list of top law firms with ranked antitrust practices on more than one continent. The rankings are based on independent research, attorney interviews and an extensive firm questionnaire.
