David Shipton


David's litigation and dispute resolution experience includes a wide range of complex commercial cross border and general commercial disputes, both before the English Courts and in arbitrations, in relation to matters arising out of: breach of contract; breach of fiduciary duties; fraud; joint venture and shareholder disputes; and cross border insolvencies.

David has, as part of a team, advised a range of major international corporations and financial institutions operating out of a variety of sectors, including structured finance, energy, telecommunications, media and fund management.

Representative experience includes:

  • Advising a private equity fund in connection with a major dispute with a telecommunications group, including an arbitral hearing at the LCIA.
  • Dana Gas PJSC v Dana Gas Sukuk Ltd and others [2017] EWHC 2928 (Comm): Acting for BlackRock Global Allocation Fund, Inc. in its claim concerning the validity of a purchase undertaking entered into by Dana Gas PJSC.
  • Advising Special Administrators of MF Global UK Limited in connection with a number of disputes arising out of the special administration of MF Global UK.
  • Advising 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) on its $6.5 billion dispute with IPIC and Aabar.

David also regularly acts for the firm’s pro bono clients. His pro bono work has included assisting Macmillan Cancer Trust with High Court proceedings against a contractor and advising Stonewall on defamation cases. He has attended the Bar Pro Bono Unit and regularly provides pro bono legal advice through the Citizen's Advice Bureau at the Royal Courts of Justice.
