On October 1, 2018, Weil was honored with the Gideon Award by the Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD). Pro Bono Committee Co-Chair Steven Reiss accepted the award on behalf of the Firm at the First Monday in October Gala and Mock Supreme Court Argument at the NYU School of Law. The event marked the 30th anniversary of OAD’s founding and the 25th anniversary of its First Monday in October Gala.
Founded in 1988, OAD is one of New York City’s oldest providers of appellate representation to poor people convicted of felonies, and the City’s second oldest institutional indigent defense office. OAD represents clients in Manhattan and the Bronx in the New York Supreme Court, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Judicial Department, the New York State Court of Appeals and the federal courts. It has about a dozen lawyers on staff, including Weil alumna Kami Lizarraga.
Since 2006, Weil attorneys have participated in more than 30 pro bono matters with the OAD’s Volunteer Appellate Defender program, which offers associates from sponsoring law firms the opportunity to represent poor people convicted of felonies in criminal appeals under the intensive supervision of OAD attorneys.
