Weil was recognized as a leader in pro bono service at the 2015 Zero Tolerance benefit held by Sanctuary for Families on June 2 in New York. Partner Andrea Bernstein accepted the Law Firm Leadership Award honoring Weil’s “tireless and effective pro bono work” on behalf of Sanctuary’s clients.
The fundraising event raised more than $2.1 million to support the services provided by Sanctuary for Families, a nonprofit dedicated to serving survivors – and the children of survivors – of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender violence.
Weil lawyers have taken on a variety of pro bono matters for Sanctuary for Families, including complex Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases and custody battles to protect children from abuse. A pro bono team at Weil that worked with Sanctuary for Families obtained an unprecedented ruling to protect same-sex domestic partners from abusive family members. Weil summer associates participate every year in Sanctuary’s Courtroom Advocates Project.
Sanctuary for Families previously named four Weil lawyers – Nelly Almeida, Ginger Ellison, Dana Kaufman, and supervising partner Jackie Cohen – as 2014 Above & Beyond Honorees for Excellence in Pro Bono Advocacy at an awards ceremony in October 2014.
