Working with co-counsel from The Bronx Defenders Family Defense Practice, associate Samuel Zeitlin helped a recently incarcerated Weil pro bono client reunite with her children. Weil’s supervising attorney for the project was Benjamin Marks. Sally Langan, then a Litigation paralegal, provided support on the matter as well.
Our client was incarcerated for several years. During that period, her three children were split up and sent to different foster homes. Less than a year before our client was due to be released from prison, the foster care agency filed an action in Bronx family court to terminate her parental rights. Together with Jessica Horan-Block of the Bronx Defenders, Mr. Zeitlin prepared the case for trial. As the case proceeded, our client was released from prison and worked tirelessly to overcome every hurdle placed in front of her as she reintegrated into society and sought to regain custody of her children. After Mr. Zeitlin deposed the foster care case worker, revealing major weaknesses in the agency’s case, the team was able to halt the progress of the termination of parental rights action. Our client’s children have all been returned to her, and the foster care agency is preparing to withdraw its suit.
Every year, the Bronx Defenders honors a client at its annual gala who has shown particular strength and resilience over the past year. This year, on October 11, the nonprofit honored our client for the incredible dedication that has enabled her to rehabilitate herself, reestablish her life and rebuild her family.
