Weil’s London Finance team had the lead role in two of the most significant European finance deals of 2014 which were recognized at the IFLR European Awards announced last night.
The Structured Finance team acted on Blackstone / GSO’s Phoenix Park CLO, the “Structured Finance and Securitisation Deal of the Year”. The team worked closely with its client Blackstone / GSO to devise a wholly new way of addressing the difficulties presented for the CLO market by the EU risk retention rules. This retention structure has become a new reference point in the CLO market. The award reflects a highly successful couple of years for the team, having acted on a third of all public European CLO transactions since the market re-opened in 2013, as well as on many major transactions in other asset classes including NPL portfolio acquisitions, restructurings of distressed securitizations, RMBS, consumer asset and auto related securitizations.
Weil’s Banking team were lead bank-side advisors for the “Loan Deal of the Year” for DE Master Blenders. Weil advised clients JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and another major financial institution, as lead arrangers on the €7.6 billion financing of the joint venture arrangement between DE Master Blenders 1753 (DEMB) and Mondelēz International. The Mondelēz/DEMB joint venture will create Jacobs Douwe Egberts, the world’s leading pure-play coffee company, with annual revenues of more than €7 billion and leading market positions in more than two dozen countries. A transatlantic London/New York team led on what was one of the largest cross-border financings of 2014. In a hugely successful night for the Weil Banking team, they were also nominated for another “Loan Deal of the Year” for Ceva Santé Animale and for the overall “Loans Team of the Year”. The Banking team had a sterling 2014 acting on many of the largest financings and cementing its position as a permanent fixture on Europe’s largest leveraged buyout situations. This was reflected in Weil’s recent ranking as #1 Legal Advisor to Debt Providers involving UK Targets in 2014 by Mergermarket.
The IFLR Awards celebrate the most innovative legal deals of 2014 and those that have the greatest market impact , and are based on research from a variety of sources. Weil’s other nominations at the IFLR European Awards 2015 included “Private Equity Team of the Year,” “Most Innovative US Firm in Europe” and “International Law Firm of the Year.”
