Technology & IP Transactions partner Karen Ballack has been named among the “Top Women Lawyers” in California of 2016 by the Daily Journal.
Ms. Ballack was praised for negotiating the IP and technology aspects of several high-profile deals, including client GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ acquisition of IBM's global commercial semiconductor business. In that that deal, which was a reversal of the usual transaction template in that IBM will ultimately be paying GLOBALFOUNDRIES an estimated $1.5 billion to take IBM’s unprofitable chip manufacturing business off IBM’s hands, Ms. Ballack and her team had to deal with challenging IP and technology issues, including carefully analyzing IBM’s vast patent licensing program that impacted the 16,000 IBM patents and patent applications that GLOBALFOUNDRIES acquired as part of the transaction.
She was also recognized for her key role in Facebook’s $16 billion acquisition of WhatsApp, which signed in just five days. Ms. Ballack and her IP team were able to use their expertise in IP and technology to help the client prioritize the IP and technology diligence issues that needed to be addressed in the tight time frame to get the deal signed, the publication noted.
