Senior partner Ira Millstein’s recently released book The Activist Director: Lessons from the Boardroom and the Future of the Corporation was reviewed by strategy + business. The review synopsizes Ira’s long and influential career as a pioneer of corporate governance since the late 1970s. It highlights his work guiding the boards of directors of numerous prominent companies, including General Electric Co., General Motors Co. and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. It notes how “Millstein helped GM’s board find its feet” and calls the corporate governance guidelines he helped General Motors Co. develop “a Magna Carta for directors.” The review also summarizes several of the main points Ira makes in The Activist Director, including the idea that boards are the key to responsible, sustainable businesses.
