Weil Patent Litigation and Life Sciences practices Co-Head Edward Reines has been profiled in Law360 as a 2019 Life Sciences MVP. He is one of just five attorneys across the legal industry recognized for their achievements in the Life Sciences sector over the past year.
The Q&A profile noted Mr. Reines’ expertise in high-stakes patent cases, highlighting a resounding win for Bio-Rad Laboratories against competitor 10X Genomics. He secured a $24 million patent infringement verdict in a jury trial – the full amount of requested damages – and obtained a rare permanent injunction barring 10X from manufacturing or selling a number of its rival devices.
The article also discussed Mr. Reines’ path to patent litigation, his deep ties to Silicon Valley and the thrill of working closely with clients on the cutting-edge of the Life Sciences field. "The inventions are just fascinating. Many of the inventions we protect are great leaps forward with huge promise for improving the lives of many people," Mr. Reines said. "It's easy to love."
He stressed the importance of teamwork in winning big cases and the motivation he gets from being part of a leading Life Sciences practice. In addition, Mr. Reines advised young lawyers working at the intersection of life sciences and intellectual property to avoid getting immersed in the details of the science for science’s sake. "You have to understand how to translate. At the end of the day the complex biotechnology has to be digested for the layperson," he said.
Mr. Reines concluded by saying that success is all about passion. "Make sure that you enjoy what you're doing and that should push you," he said. "If you're passionate about what you're doing, you care about it and you're smart enough, you can figure it out."
