Weil Patent Litigation and Life Sciences practices Co-Head Edward Reines was again recently named among the “Top Intellectual Property Attorneys” in California for 2019 by the Daily Journal. He has received this honor on numerous occasions since 2008.
In its profile of Mr. Reines, the Daily Journal highlights his role in obtaining a jury verdict in favor of Firm client Bio-Rad Laboratories, a Bay Area-based manufacturer of products for the life sciences research and clinical diagnostics markets, in a seven-patent infringement suit against competitor 10X Genomics. The jurors held that all of Mr. Reines’ client’s patents are valid and infringed, and that the infringement was willful. They answered 100 verdict questions in Bio-Rad’s favor and awarded the company the amount Reines requested: $24 million.
The profile also cited new client Groupon’s settlement. When the company lost a $82.5 million jury verdict on claims it infringed four of IBM’s e-commerce patents, Mr. Reines was called on to replace former counsel. Through his extensive cleanup, both parties ultimately settled for $57 million.
The Daily Journal names attorneys to this list and profiles them based on a number of criteria, including hundreds of nominations and staff selections, along with consideration of each nominee’s major intellectual property successes over the last year.
