Sylvia Mayer, a partner in the Business Finance & restructuring practice in Weil's Houston office, was quoted on the drop in bankruptcy filings in Texas in 2011 in an article in today's online edition of
Texas Lawyer. According to the article, total bankruptcies in the state fell by 10.8% in 2011 compared to 2010, smaller than the nationwide drop of 11.5% for the same period. Ms. Mayer believes that companies and individuals have held off filing for bankruptcy due in large part to market uncertainty, and expects filings to increase in 2012. "I think you never solve the problem until you go ahead and deal with it, and at some point we are going to have to face the music and deal with the pain," she added.
