Kyle J. Ortiz is an associate in Weil’s Business Finance & Restructuring Department. Mr. Ortiz’s practice includes representations of both debtors and creditors.
Mr. Ortiz has been involved in teams representing chapter 11 debtors, including: American Airlines, Inc.’s parent company AMR Corporation, and Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. Mr. Ortiz has also been involved in creditor and lender representations in the financial services and real estate sectors.
Mr. Ortiz is a regular contributor to the Weil Bankruptcy Blog, a member of its editorial board, and co-author of the Stern Files, which provides ongoing analysis of the Supreme Court’s decision in Stern v. Marshall, 10-179, 131 S.Ct. 2594 (June 23, 2011).
In his pro bono practice, Mr. Ortiz is a member of Weil’s pro bono housing team and is involved in the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project. Mr. Ortiz’s pro bono work has been recognized by both the Legal Aid Society and the New York State Bar Association.
Prior to joining Weil, Mr. Ortiz founded Operation ASHA in Cambodia, an arm of the worldwide tuberculosis treatment organization, Operation ASHA. Operation ASHA in Cambodia has grown to over 50 tuberculosis treatment centers serving over a million people in 1283 villages in and around Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. Mr. Ortiz currently sits on the U.S. Board of Directors for Operation ASHA Worldwide.
Mr. Ortiz received his B.S. degree from Northern Michigan University, where he graduated as Outstanding Graduating Male and served as student body president. Mr. Ortiz earned his M.P.P. degree from the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, and his J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School where he was an Edmund Spencer Scholar.
