Joseph Newberg joined Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP as a partner in September 2002 as part of the opening of the firm’s Boston office. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Newberg had been a stockholder with the Boston firm of Hutchins, Wheeler & Dittmar.
Mr. Newberg focuses his practice on sophisticated problems of private equity funds and fund managers, and has particular experience in the international aspects of private equity transactions. He has advised on the formation of private equity funds with over $25 billion of capital commitments, and regularly advises these funds on administrative issues and investment transactions. Representative fund clients include Thomas H. Lee Partners and Berkshire Partners. Mr. Newberg has also provided advice in connection with acquisitions of interests in Fund Sponsors by institutional investors.
Mr. Newberg has been a lecturer in the Graduate Tax Program at Boston University School of Law (1982-1984) and an adjunct assistant professor in the Bentley College Graduate Program in Taxation (1985-1986), and has served as co-chairman of the Boston Bar Association’s International Tax Committee. He has lectured frequently on private equity tax topics in NYC, Boston and on the West Coast (including, on fund investments into LLC's).
Mr. Newberg has been quoted in Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Inc. and The Wall Street Journal, as an authority on tax planning matters for closely-held businesses, and has lectured on these subjects.
Mr. Newberg has served as chairman of the Planning Board of the Town of Belmont, Massachusetts, and is a member of the Boston and American Bar Associations.
