Meritocracy

Lavell Malloy
Litigation/Regulatory, Securities and Corporate Governance and Complex Commercial Litigation

Lavell enjoys the opportunity to do securities and corporate governance work as well as complex commercial litigation at Weil. Before joining the firm, he clerked for the Honorable Stanley R. Chesler in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

I had a horrible impression of all big law firms before I came here. My first summer I clerked for another big firm and I was discouraged with the fact that the partners didn’t talk to associates and no one was friends outside the office. So when I came to Weil I expected it to be the same here. But it isn’t. People here show appreciation, they take a personal interest in training you. I often work directly with the co-head of my practice group and appreciate very much the value he gives to my opinions. It makes a very big difference.

Partners here care about the development of associates. It’s a meritocracy. There is an understanding that it doesn’t matter whether you’re junior; if you can stand up in court we’ll let you do it. They want people to step up and take a leading role. If you’re a first year and can handle the work of a fifth year, they’ll give you that responsibility. I can’t tell you the countless first years who are writing their own briefs and sitting down in client meetings.

People are very receptive to questions. For instance, I recall one time when I had to write a cross-examination outline for one of the co-heads of the complex commercial litigation group. I was very impressed that I could go directly to him regarding feedback. I didn’t have to filter my questions through five other people. Working hands-on, directly with the partners, is the best way to learn.
