Jeff chose Weil because he wanted a Washington DC firm with the resources of a large New York based firm. He enjoys practicing in the firm’s Antitrust/Competition group because he is getting a foundation in both litigation and corporate work.
I wanted to join a big firm with a strong client list, an excellent training program and a good learning environment and Weil provides all of that. It’s been the best of both worlds – a New York based firm with a smaller firm feel. I have been able to observe good people, top people, in each group. Working here has been even more enjoyable than I expected, in part because I really like the people here. They also understand what new associates are going through.
It seems to me that the bottom line at Weil is if you work hard and want to be involved and take on more responsibility, you can do it. I was working directly with partners and other associates right away, and only two months after joining Weil I was working on an antitrust analysis of a potential multi-billion dollar merger. I was part of the team, trying to add value where I could, and I at least felt like I was making a real contribution. From the beginning there was an open door policy for going to partners and I have received feedback on a regular basis. I also get to stay involved with my work product – the memos I write virtually never just go to another attorney and then disappear.
Most of the partners in our group also have extensive FTC and other governmental experience which has given me a level of knowledge and insight into the antitrust process that I would not otherwise have. I get to be involved at every stage, working with clients and with government agencies, in meetings and on conference calls. And because I’m honing my corporate and litigation skills I feel that I’m staying well rounded.
