Guido came to Weil because he wanted to work on major private equity transactions as part of a large experienced team. He believes that clients appreciate the fact that Weil takes care of business as well as legal solutions.
What I find helpful and even unique is Weil’s open door policy, which is not common with German firms. I can always walk into a colleague's office and discuss transactions, and when I am looking for a second opinion I get it. Everyone is busy but still open for conversation. There really is a sense that we’re all on the same team – whether here in Frankfurt or in New York, people cooperate and work together to get the deal done.
I think that you can only be successful for the client if you’re working with a highly sophisticated team. And I have no doubt that working with really experienced colleagues is also making me a better lawyer. It’s not only the legal stuff you have to know but also the tactics, how to negotiate and you can only learn this by teaming up with experienced people. After a while, you get a feeling for how to react in certain situations.
I have worked on some really exciting transactions. One of them involved a seller that was faced with litigation during the process of selling its share. Weil had to find a solution that was convenient for the client and also moved the transaction forward. When the firm represented Black Lion Beverages IV B.V. in the sale of Apollinaris & Schweppes GmbH to Coca-Cola Europe we had to get ten or so different agreements negotiated on the same day. I was in the notary's office for 24 hours but we got it all done in the end.
