As a member of Weil’s National Diversity Committee, Yolanda is actively involved in the firm’s Continuing Diversity Education Program and Diversity Training Program.
One of the reasons I came to Weil was that I never felt I needed to be anything more than a bright, hardworking attorney. There's not one mold or two molds or even five molds that people fall into here.
It’s a huge benefit to have so many people from different backgrounds available. If you are interviewing a witness to determine if he is going to help or hurt your case, you will get a much richer takeaway if you have the perspectives of different lawyers from different genders, backgrounds or belief systems. You will each interact differently with the witness and analyze his responses differently. That’s an example of why assembling a diverse team is critical.
Diversity of thought and diversity of representation are goals we always tune into when meeting other people, from opposing counsel to witnesses to judges. Not everyone is going to see things the same way. One size does not fit all in a sophisticated litigation environment.
The firm has made a big commitment to establishing a workplace where people from all types of backgrounds can feel comfortable. One formal expression of that commitment is through our active affinity groups which focus on recruiting, mentoring, networking, business development and even serve as a way to find pro bono opportunities. Another example is found in our National Diversity Committee, which includes associates and staff as well as partners. There is a real effort to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.
