Weil, Gotshal & Manges retired partner Robert G. Sugarman has been elected the National Chair of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). His three-year term began at the ADL’s Annual Meeting held on October 31, 2009.
The national chairmanship, a position with high visibility nationally and internationally, recognizes Mr. Sugarman’s decades of work on behalf of the ADL and its principles of fighting anti-Semitism and securing justice and fair treatment for all. A litigator at Weil Gotshal, Mr. Sugarman’s professional career encompassed a broad range of intellectual property and First Amendment matters, and his pro bono activities have continually reflected his commitment to promoting anti-discrimination and free speech for all.
In recognition of this prestigious honor, Mr. Sugarman’s colleagues and peers held a breakfast in his honor at Weil, Gotshal’s New York office earlier this month. Mr. Sugarman and Abraham H. Foxman, Holocaust survivor and longtime national director of the ADL, discussed the activities of the League and the challenges it faces in today’s tumultuous world.
Mr. Sugarman has long been active in community and philanthropic work. He was previously a vice-chair of the ADL and was honored at the 2003 annual dinner of its New York Lawyers Division. He is a past president of Hillel of New York and served as a member of the executive committee of the Lawyers Division of UJA/Federation of New York.
