Penny Reid is a Litigation partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP, where her practice focuses on coordinating and taking to trial complex civil litigations in state and federal courts throughout the country, including securities fraud, class actions and bankruptcy litigations. As a result of her accounting background, Ms. Reid is often called upon to handle matters involving accounting disputes and related internal investigations for major corporations. Ms. Reid also has extensive experience handling large domestic and international arbitrations before the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). She has argued appeals before the United States Court of Appeals and the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Dallas.
Ms. Reid has been involved in several high profile cases, including serving as trial counsel for Vivendi in a large securities class action and related individual securities actions; lead trial counsel for Crane in the business valuation arbitration, In the Matter of the Arbitration between Gerald J. Gartner, Claimant and Crane & Co., Inc.; litigation counsel for General Growth Properties, Inc., Lehman Brothers, and General Motors in matters relating to their bankruptcy filings; and lead trial counsel in In re: Footstar, Inc., a bankruptcy litigation against Kmart. She has successfully represented a wide range of companies and in various industries, including serving as litigation counsel for THL Funds in a fraud and accounting malpractice action against Grant Thornton, and for UnitedHealth Group in a massive class action and multi-district litigation proceedings involving a class of approximately 500,000 physicians.
Ms. Reid is a member of the American Bar Association, the Bar Association of the City of New York, the Texas Bar Association, the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, and the Center for American and International Law. She has written and spoken on issues relating to arbitrations and managing complex litigation.
Ms. Reid also is active in numerous public service organizations, including serving as a current member of the New York Chapter Make-A-Wish Advisory Board and a former member of the National Board for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and is a sustaining member of Attorneys Serving the Community.
Ms. Reid is admitted to practice in New York and Texas, and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and the United States District Court for the Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas.
Ms. Reid received her J.D., with honors, from the University of Texas, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree, also with honors, from the University of Texas as well, and was a member of the Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society.
