John Scribner is an antitrust partner in the Washington, DC office. His practice focuses on antitrust counseling and litigation, with a particular emphasis on mergers. Mr. Scribner has played a lead role in obtaining antitrust approval for numerous transactions in a variety of industries. Mr. Scribner successfully represented Apple in the purchase of various patents from Novell and Nortel. Mr. Scribner recently represented Nemak, a subsidiary of Alfa SAB de CV, the largest industrial conglomerate in Mexico, in its acquisition of J.L. French Automotive Castings, Inc. Nemak and J.L. French were leading suppliers of automotive casting parts in the U.S. The deal was approved without the issuance of a Second Request. Mr. Scribner regularly counsels clients including Sanofi-Aventis, Applied Materials, Dell, and Abbott Laboratories on potential transactions. He also represented Univision Music Group in its sale to Universal Music Group.
Previously, Mr. Scribner spent five years as a litigation attorney with the Federal Trade Commission where he was actively involved in merger and non-merger investigations in a wide range of industries, including defense, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, aviation, energy, industrial products, medical devices and high technology. He served as lead attorney in the FTC’s investigation of Boeing’s acquisition of McDonnell Douglas.
He has also done extensive work in private antitrust litigation, including defending conspiracy, monopolization, tying, and antitrust counterclaims in patent cases on behalf of Johnson & Johnson, Eastman Kodak, Applera Corporation, Bertelsmann and Providence Equity Partners.
Mr. Scribner has been recognized for his outstanding legal performance both at the FTC and in private practice. While at the FTC, he received the Award for Superior Service and the Award for Meritorious Service. Mr. Scribner has been recognized by Chambers USA 2007-2013 as a “Leading” Lawyer in Antitrust. He was also listed in the Washington DC Super Lawyers 2012-2013 for antitrust. In 2013, he was listed as a recommended lawyer for antitrust by Legal 500. He was included in the Guide to the World’s Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers 2008. In 2004, Global Competition Review named Mr. Scribner as one of the “Ten More To Watch” in its list of the Best Competition Lawyers under 40. Mr. Scribner has given speeches on a number of antitrust topics including how to get your life sciences deal past the US antitrust authorities, the role of efficiencies in merger investigations and on antitrust issues that arise in patent litigation.
Mr. Scribner received his J.D. in 1992 from the University of Oklahoma College of Law where he served as Note Editor of the Oklahoma Law Review.
