Edward R. McCarthy is a senior associate in the Litigation Department of Weil, Gotshal & Manges’ Miami office and is a member of the firm’s Complex Commercial Litigation practice group. Mr. McCarthy has counseled clients in a broad range of industries, including banking and financial services, health care, construction, marine and aviation, and research and manufacturing. His practice has focused on the defense of complex multi-district litigations and class actions, as well as matters related to securities and corporate governance; products; and commercial lending and collections. He also has experience representing businesses in bankruptcy and receivership.
Mr. McCarthy has served as an elected member of the Florida Bar Young Lawyers’ Division Board of Governors since 2004, acting as Chairman of the state-wide Moot Court Competition; Law School Committee and editor of the Across the Bar newsletter. He has spoken and written on varied topics, including organizing and moderating basic skills seminars and lecture series for law students and attorneys on the topics of federal and appellate practice, professionalism, marketing oneself, and achieving early success in the practice of law. He has also published articles on arbitration and commercial damages.
Throughout his career, Mr. McCarthy has volunteered with various not-for-profit organizations, including monitoring ongoing developments of the jurisprudence of the International Criminal Court for Human Rights Watch; representing a pro bono client in a federal jury trial for the Southern District of Florida’s Volunteer Lawyers’ Project; and representing abused and neglected children through Lawyers for Children America. In 2007, Lawyers for Children America awarded Mr. McCarthy with the John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Award for his pro bono work on behalf of abused and neglected children, and in 2008, Put Something Back, the joint project of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and the Dade County Bar Association, awarded Mr. McCarthy with its annual Pro Bono Service Award.
Mr. McCarthy is a member of the American Bar Association, the Florida Bar, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Florida, and the Dade County Bar Association. He obtained a JD from the University of Miami School of Law, where he was a Dean’s Merit Scholar, a Dean’s Fellow for Constitutional Law, and an active member of the Law Review and Moot Court Board.
